Idol Worship in Hinduism

On Idol Worship

There are several sects among Hindus too who downplay the importance of idol worship. Other religions already say that praying to idols is blasphemy. But these people are also dependent on certain symbols that they consider holy.

So what's wrong if someone uses an idol (a symbolic God) to be able to connect to the Supreme?

One cannot focus on vacuum. Only the successful gnan yogis can meditate like that. Others need some symbol. The cross is holy. The crescent is holy. And so is the OM. Some people take OM and create a personal God out of it. They create a symbolic God (an idol or a painting) so that they feel connected. They'd perform rituals like bathing the idol, draping it in clothes, and would feed it (at least they think they are doing service to God).

God never laid out any rules. He didn't say pray like this or don't pray like that. But then, every religion has rules. These rules were laid out by people who claimed to have experienced God. The …

PERFUME vs DEO: WHAT DO YOU PREFER?

The following is a page from my book on personality grooming and development. In due course, we'll be sharing excerpts from the book so that you get some tips while knowing what the book is about. If you haven't already, read our post on how to position your feet; how to walk properly on this blog.

Coming to perfumes, it is too hard to find a genuine perfume these days, especially if you are looking one for men. All of them are deodorants with high percentage of alcohol.

DON'T TRY TO TASTE IT. This alcohol is pretty different from one you have at bars

Personally, I dislike the smell of AXE; They add mandarin to it; I don't know if that adds to smell, making it intolerant. Science says mandarin attracts females and hence those "falling angel ads" you see on TV and elsewhere. Check the package to make sure what you are buying. If you look carefully, the less advertised deo have lower level of alcohol. For example, Yardley and Park Avenue are more of deo compared to AXE and Wild Stone. Even within the brand, there are groups you'll find repelling. Take Yardley Elegance. It has lower concentration of alcohol. But Yardley Gold, on the other hand, has enough concentration to set your body on fire.

A genuine perfume would be too costly even if you find it. If you are looking for better perfume (+deo combo), check the level of alcohol in it. The higher the level of alcohol, the more it will smell bad once the real perfume wears off.

We do not generally check the ingredients while buying perfume and often confuse deo with perfume. A genuine perfume will never have alcohol - they use other solvents like oil etc. If you find them, do share with others in comments or in message so we put it out for suggestions.

If you are looking for a deodorant or alcohol based perfume, always check for the amount and percentage of alcohol in those spray cans. For example if the packaging says 73pp, you may assume that for every 100ml, you are buying 73% of just methanol alcohol. Not that the remaining 27% is perfume. It could have other ingredients too. Check them out.

Best app for Android phones - Clean Master from Cheetah Mobile

After five years of testing different multipurpose apps for Android maintenance, I realize Clean Master from Cheetah Mobile is the best maintenance app for Android phones. Not only maintenance, Clean Master offers you much more than you can expect from a single app.

For a while, it felt the "All in One for Android" is good. But turned out it leaves out add-ins even after you remove it. What is available in single code in Clean Master of Cheetah Mobile, is available as add-ins in All in One app for Android. When you uninstall All in One app, the add-ins continue to run in RAM. I could not find any method to remove them as they were not visible in any App Managers. I had to do a factory reset and that was when my doubts were removed and I acknowledged Clean Master of Cheetah Mobile is the best option for Android phones.

Analysis of Mahabharata Characters - Bhishma

Bhishma is one of the powerful characters of the epic, Mahabharata that contains and shows a pious way of life to the mortals living on earth. I am starting this Analysis of Mahabharata Characters with Bhishma as he is the oldest character in the epic/saga and has tremendous influence on the other characters of Mahabharata. Bhishma was the son of king Shantanu and Ganga (the river Ganges in female form). Bhishma was considered one of the eight Vasus (rishis) who had to take birth on earth due to a curse. Before we analyze the character, let us take a quick look at the story of Bhishma according to the Mahabharata.
Background Of Bhishma Bhismha is considered one of the eight Vasus who stole a cow named Kamadhenu from a sage. When the sage cursed them to take birth as humans, all Vasus asked for his forgiveness. The sage, for seven Vasus who helped the main Vasu to steal the cow, reduced the curse to death just after birth. However, the main Vasu who actually stole the cow was to stay …

Significance or Meaning of Swaha and Ithi in Sanskrit Mantras

You might have noticed that all mantras begin with the sound of "OM". What you might have ignored or failed to notice that mantras in Sanskrit end with "ithi" or "swaha". Some of you end mantras with just a "namah".

Not to scare you, but if you fail to use "ithi" at end of each mantra or at the very end of any stotra (hymn), the mantra & related offering (sacrifice or prasadam) doesn't reach the god being prayed.

The word "ithi" marks the end of mantra, and urges gods to accept whatever you are offering.

The word "swaha" is used more in havans (rituals were you put offerings/prasad directly into fire). Since people put offerings into fire while saying "swaha", many of us associate it with "destruction". When anyone says "sab kuch swaha ho gaya (everything became swaha)", it does and should not be concluded that he or she lost things. It is a wrong notion that associates "sw…
